Rand's Philosophy Applied to Current Issues

The Fountainhead Socratic Seminar question number 103 is very relevant, especially during these modern times. From reading The Fountainhead I can conclude that Ayn Rand would have a lot to say about current issues such as our economic situation, education, and the environment. I think that Rand would be most passionate about the economy. Growing up during the Communist takeover of Russia, Rand's father lost his business and prosperity. It is easy to see how her childhood shaped her opinion of the role that government should have in a country, and more specifically, the economy. Rand believed in pure capitalism with little or no government involvement where economics were concerned. She felt that the government should only act as a passive police force, instead of actively intervening in the private sector. If Ayn Rand were alive to day, she would probably say that the economy would not be in such bad shape if there were no government bailouts or interventions. She believed in the survival of the fittest; businesses that were capable of surviving and competing, while businesses that failed would be replaced by others. On the issue of education, Rand would probably desire to lessen regulations and allow teachers to have more freedom. She would likely abolish such things as essential questions and requirements that hinder the learning process. Maximum student performance would probably be addressed as well, as Rand viewed mankind as having potential. School funding would be taken care of also. Rand would have money allocated to areas that needed it for increased performance, while making cuts where possible. Ayn Rand had a love for nature, and I think that would play a part in what she would say about the environment. I believe that she would most likely try to find a compromise between progress and preservation. She would not want government agencies such as EPA to interfere with industry, but she wouldn't want industry to destroy the environment either. On the subject of the environment, I think that Ayn Rand would like to have her cake and eat it too.
